A powerful Total Solar Eclipse in Leo arrives this Wednesday, triggering a rare "mystic rectangle" configuration that promises both significant challenges and the grace to overcome them. Meanwhile, Pluto goes out of bounds for the next four months, intensifying themes of truth-seeking and transformation while historically foreshadowing collective awakenings and societal reformation. This week's planetary energies invite us to examine where ego overshadows wisdom and to prepare for revelations that reshape our understanding of reality.

Forecast: August 10 to 16, 2026

TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE: A new lunar cycle begins with fanfare this Wednesday, August 12, when the Sun and Moon align at 20°01' Leo for a Total Solar Eclipse. Totality will be visible from Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, the Atlantic Ocean, Spain, and a small corner of Portugal. Other places in the Northern Hemisphere will see a partial eclipse, including parts of the northern U.S. (from Alaska to North Carolina), most of Canada, much of Europe, and northwestern Africa.

This is a South Node eclipse, with the two luminaries in proximity to the South Node of the Moon; this point in space represents our collective karmic past and the tendencies humanity must leave behind if we are to evolve into a more enlightened, better-functioning species.

With this South Node eclipse in kingly Leo, we are seeing evolutionary lessons involving leaders and leadership, and the troubles that eventually confront hubris and overinflated egos. On the larger world stage, we may observe the fall of those who cannot express humility or are unable to see beyond the mask of their own performance. The divide between the one standing on a pedestal and the followers at their feet closes quickly and often painfully when the idol falls from grace.

Any downfalls that occur around this eclipse are not likely to be quiet ones, given Leo's penchant for drama and desire for the spotlight. The Sabian symbol for the degree of the eclipse is: "Intoxicated chickens dizzily flap their wings, trying to fly; the often-negative and at times ludicrous first experience with spiritual lessons." Perhaps this image will seem especially appropriate as we move through the coming week.

MYSTIC RECTANGLE: At the time of the eclipse, a rare configuration called a "mystic rectangle" is formed between Mercury in Leo, Venus in Libra, Neptune in Aries, and Pluto in Aquarius. This formation indicates that we will be handling significant challenges around the time of the eclipse—perhaps facing disillusionment or deception in relationship or financial matters (Venus opposite Neptune), or dealing with the fallout of revelations, as well-kept secrets are exposed (Mercury opposite Pluto).

At the same time, a mystic rectangle—also called a "magic rectangle" or "rectangle of grace"—also grants us the skills needed to resolve the problems it presents. The gifts of the four harmonious aspects involved in the configuration include creative visioning and intuitive thinking (Mercury trine Neptune), the aspiration to transcend our personal needs and seek higher solutions (Neptune sextile Pluto), a desire to be fully honest and transparent in our relationships (Venus trine Pluto), and the ability to tactfully communicate our thoughts and ideas (Mercury sextile Venus).

RENEGADE PLUTO: Mars went "out of bounds" (OOB) last week and Pluto will follow suit this week; the dwarf planet will travel outside its normal path along the plane of the ecliptic from August 12 to December 10 this year. During this four-month period, we can expect all of Pluto's qualities to be emphasized and exaggerated—which means some may experience an urgent desire for power or control and many will feel an increase in their emotional reactivity.

At the same time, Pluto OOB gives us a great dislike of anything superficial or false, helping to uncover truths that have been hidden and endowing us with an enhanced ability to see through façades. In essence, Pluto OOB will be taking us through a powerful process of purging and detoxification, especially in realms associated with Aquarius: technologies and progressive ideologies; communities, cooperatives, organizations, and societies; the legislative branches of government; and more.

THE PEOPLE AWAKEN: Astrologer Rosanne Finn, who has done extensive research on Pluto's out-of-bounds periods in history, discovered that there is a difference between the times when Pluto was OOB to the north of the ecliptic and when it was OOB to the south. She found that when the dwarf planet strays south of its normal orbit, "people rise up through revolts and rebellions. Governmental chaos and collapse lay waste a world of corruption, opening the field for reformation and a new society."

We are currently in an eleven-year period when Pluto goes OOB to the south for a portion of each year. In 2025, Pluto was OOB for 86 days; this year it will be OOB for 120 days. The number of Pluto's OOB days will increase over the next three years, reaching a peak of 155 days in 2029. After that, the number of days decreases, ending with 67 days in the year 2035.

Ms. Finn reports that this period from 2025 to 2035 "is the last time Pluto goes out of bounds for thousands of years. A Redemption, a Revolution, a Mass Awakening of Consciousness seems not only possible but likely."

CHIRON CONVERSATION: I recently sat down to chat about Chiron with astrologer Dabney Lawless, of the Lawless Astrology Channel. We talked about Chiron's myth and why astrologers call it the Wounded Healer, discussed its manifestations in Aries and Taurus, shared how we each approach Chiron in our readings, and more. DAILY ASPECTS THIS WEEK (August 10 to 16, 2026):

Monday

Venus trine Pluto, Venus opposite Neptune: While there may be some confusion or disillusionment in relationships today, we also have the determination to get to the heart of the matter.

Mars trine North Node: This aspect supports us in aligning with our own higher purposes, while also encouraging us to connect with others of like mind.

Tuesday

Mars enters Cancer: Mars will be in the sign of the Crab from August 11 to September 27. During this seven-week period, we are strongly motivated by the need for emotional security and may feel very protective of our homes and loved ones. Intuition guides our actions, but we must also be aware of responding to a short-term mood rather than an inner knowing. There is a tendency to take other's actions personally, resulting in defensiveness or withdrawal.

Mercury opposite Pluto, Mercury trine Neptune: The mind is eager to know the truth, perhaps because intuitively it knows when something is being hidden. Verbal arguments and power struggles are possible as secrets are revealed.

Venus trine Uranus: New opportunities for relationship may unfold with this aspect. Friendships tend to be more important than romances at this time. We are open to broadening our social sphere, ready to interact with people who are outside our usual community.

Wednesday

Mars sextile Chiron: This aspect can help us feel more confident in speaking our truth or in asserting ourselves.

Total Solar Eclipse/New Moon: The Sun and Moon align at 10:36 a.m. PDT today, when both luminaries are at 20°01' Leo.

Mercury sextile Uranus: Inventive ideas, new insights, and "aha" moments are supported by this aspect.

Thursday

Mercury sextile Venus: This is likely the best day of the week for conversations. Venus in Libra indicates a willingness to be accommodating, while Mercury in Leo is both confident and playful in its expression.

Friday

No major aspects are exact today.

Saturday

Mercury conjunct Jupiter: For better or worse, words are spoken with optimism, enthusiasm, and great dramatic flair today. Some may exaggerate the facts to make a point. In the excitement and due to focusing on the bigger picture, we could miss some important details.

Sunday

Mars quincunx Pluto: It is tempting to act compulsively today, without thinking about the consequences. Competitiveness or a need for power and control can cause some to be dishonest or deceptive.
